Why Citronella Still Works and How to Use It Smarter
Share
Citronella is one of the most recognizable natural ingredients in mosquito control. Found in candles, sprays and incense, it’s often the go-to for people looking to avoid harsh chemicals. But does it actually work? And is it enough on its own? The short answer is yes, but it depends on how you use it.
What Is Citronella?
Citronella oil comes from lemongrass and has been used for decades as a natural insect repellent. Its strong citrus-like scent helps mask the smells that attract mosquitoes, making it harder for them to find you.
While citronella is plant-based and safe when used properly, its effectiveness is often limited by how it’s delivered and how long it lasts.
Why It Doesn't Always Work
Citronella can lose potency quickly. That’s why citronella candles and sprays often need to be reapplied or relit throughout the evening. On its own, it may only offer short-term relief, especially in open spaces or breezy conditions.
That’s where blending matters. When citronella is combined with other essential oils like cedarwood and cinnamon, it becomes part of a more reliable and pleasant bug-fighting formula.
Our Approach
At Southern Ground, we don’t use citronella by itself. We pair it with oils that also help repel mosquitoes and add depth to the scent. Cedarwood gives it a warm woodsy note while cinnamon adds a spicy edge. Combined with our recycled coffee base, this blend burns evenly and slowly, filling the air with a natural aroma that actually works.
How to Use Citronella Smarter
- Use only outdoors in open, well-ventilated areas
- Light incense before you head outside so the scent can spread
- Burn multiple incense points for wider coverage
- Choose natural oil blends over synthetic citronella products
Citronella is still a valuable tool in mosquito control. It just needs the right support. Our blends deliver that support by pairing citronella with clean-burning coffee grounds and other effective oils that help you enjoy more time outside.
